First field trip!

It was homeschool day at the Frontier Culture Museum, so we were able to enjoy a fun filled (and HOT) afternoon of learning and exploration. First, we explored the West African village.
Then we made our way to the English farm.  The kids were able to stoke the fire, grate cheese, and stir dough to make fritters, while learning about life on a yeoman's farm. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures.
At the Irish farm, we had a chance to grind oats.
The kids also tried making flax for linen, but it was very crowded at the German farm and we were all hot and tired.  Overall, it was a fun afternoon and I'm sure we will return again soon!

Week 9

In Week 9, we covered the water cycle.  It is raining this week, so we've had lots of opportunities to follow up.  After reading many library books and watching YouTube videos, C illustrated the water cycle.
We then made water cycle bead bracelets for a more in depth look at the phases of the water cycle.
Blue is for rain, green for grass, purple for puddle, orange for sun, and yellow for cloud.  M joined in and this was a great tool for helping the kids remember the order of the cycle.

Week 8

I've taken a break for vacation and am trying to catch back up, so this will be mostly a pic post.  In MFW Week 8, we covered the 4 seasons. One of C's favorite activities was making tree cut outs using an outline of her arm and hand.  She decorated each tree according to a season.

Week 5

We got some new manipulatives from Saxon.  The kids were excited to try them out.
We also had fun making the "paper doll" style ship from MFW.  This was a great way to review the "sh" sound.

Week 4

We had a busy week!  It rained a lot so we did not get outside as much as we wanted, but we found plenty of other things to do. This was our Wednesday PE class:
We continued our study of plants and flowers and used our previously dried flowers to decorate bookmarks.
We also continued watching our bean plants. They are really growing!
On Friday, we constructed flowers and labeled the parts. Both kids were excited to complete this activity!

Fun at the Fair

A trip to our county fair tied in nicely with our study of plants. The kids enjoyed seeing all the different fruits, vegetables, and flowers that were being judged.

Week 3

We continued our study of plants and flowers this week. On Monday, C made her scroll and we also constructed a worm habitat. We dug in the dirt piles around our shop, but were only able to find one worm since it has been so dry. The habitat consists of dirt and sand topped with dead leaves. We covered the top of our jar with tin foil and poked holes in it for air. The sides are covered in brown paper so the worm won't hide in the dark center.
We also went on a nature walk and collected different wild flowers. C is pressing them in a book and we will then use them for an art project. M also joined us for some lessons and worked on making AB patterns.
